Tools and the Lipstick effect

It’s called the Lipstick Effect. It was coined by Leonard Lauder, chairman of Estee Lauder, in 2001 after sales of the cosmetic staple continued to climb amidst a severe downturn in the economy in the wake of 9/11. According to a New York Times article earlier this year, Lauder says when the economy is shaky “sales increase as women boost their mood with inexpensive lipstick purchases instead of $500 sling backs.”

From Scrabble tiles that spell out L-O-V-E, to roses (available in singles or bouquets), lingerie, chicken noodle soup, pets (dogs, twin kittens, dinosaurs . . .), tacky Christmas reindeer sweaters, Whoopie Cushions, and basketball themed toilet paper, Facebook has the sentiment you’re looking for.

The Right Tools Can Give you an Edge

It’s January (almost February), and that means it’s time to celebrate the birth of 2027’s National Hockey League entry draft participants. Sound a tad premature? Perhaps. But just in case you’re a hockey fan with the desire to snap up a piece of memorabilia a couple of decades earlier than everyone else, start collecting this month’s birth announcements.

Malcolm Gladwell, author of Outliers: The Story of Success, uses NHL players as an example of how the date of a boy’s birth can start the ball rolling -- or puck sliding . . .

Racing School - where giving the boss the gears takes on a whole new meaning

When you think of team building exercises, hitting the track in a high powered stock car doesn’t immediately spring to mind. But Roy Gangdal, general manager of Proformance Racing, insists that a day racing and learning high-speed driving skills can build cohesion in a corporate group in a way that other traditional corporate activities -- golf tournaments, for instance -- can’t.
Precision and Style, no matter how many wheels are on the ground.

Last month Italian car maker Maserati unveiled their lightest, yet slowest model in years. Lacking the type of horse power car enthusiasts have come to expect, the Milani built bicycle certainly puts a unique twist on the turbulent automotive manufacturing industry and the year most companies in that sector would like to forget.

The crossover potential for the bike to catch the eye of those revved up by elite cars is limited. But the brand message of innovation and striking design should still resonate with both petrol heads and pedal pushers.
The Tools to Take on a Messy World

Pulitzer Prize winning author Russell Baker is infamous for once forgoing the obligatory inspirational commencement speech he was invited to give to the graduating class of Connecticut College in favor of a more pessimistic view. “'The best advice I can give anybody about going out into the world is this,” he said “Don't do it. I have been out there. It is a mess.”
When the Vancouver Molson Indy ended its 14-year run, the city of Edmonton seized the opportunity to represent Western Canada and host a world class race event.

This year’s Rexall Edmonton Indy (July 24-26) will also host the Canadian Tire NASCAR series race, as well as Northern Alberta Sports Club Car (NASCC) and FIL races.
It’s summer, the season where even kicking back on the deck beside a smoking barbecue while catching up with a friend falls under the category of “big plans for today.”

But there’s a disturbing trend threatening the future of our beloved Canadian summers.
Anatomy of a Race Weekend

Things will go wrong. It’s not a glass half full, glass half empty proposition. When it comes to racing, it’s simply part of the game. So, when Tony Morris Jr. missed a qualifying heat and ended up in seventh position of the GPT1 class for the final race in the Rexall Edmonton Indy’s NASCC Eurasia Cup, he had to gear up for the challenge.
An Organized Garage: Taking the Challenge

How much stuff does one person need? It’s a tricky question, because the line between a want and a need can often be pretty fuzzy.

But to a growing number of consumers, even asking the question in the first place has shed some light on the power of being organized and the perils of working amidst clutter.

This Christmas Get Time on Your Side

If this is the first time you’ve heard that one of Formula 1 racer Michael Schumacher’s cars is for sale on Ebay, unfortunately you’re probably too late to cast a bid.

We regret that things didn’t end differently. This could have been the first time you finished your Christmas shopping in November. The only piece left in the puzzle would have been one of those ridiculous giant bows and you could have rested easy for a month while everyone else was scurrying to the mall. Dare to dream.
